32 marathons in 32 days – that’s the lofty challenge Gerry Duffy and Ken Whitelaw have set themselves. Staring on 2nd July, the pair are going to attempt to run an amazing 32 marathons in 32 consecutive days in the 32 counties of Ireland to raise funds for charity. Irish Autism Action and Autism NI are going to be the main benefactors of the funds raised but Gerry and Ken also wish to give a portion of the proceeds to the Irish Cancer Society.
Although this unique challenge has never before being tried in Ireland, to make it truly special Gerry and Ken are asking 32 different people to join them each day to run, jog or waddle either a full or a half marathon. This is where you come in – to raise as much money as possible for the charities they need over 1,000 runners to sign up for the event. Almost 300 have signed up over the last few weeks but they are asking you to consider joining them for what is possibly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to take part in a marathon or half marathon in your local county.
To participate you are asked to raise €1,000 if doing a full marathon or €600 if doing a half marathon. Sponsorship cards will be available to help you out with fundraising. The website, www.32marathons.com also has tonnes of tips for helping you to raise the money. You can also register via the site, as well as read through the FAQ’s, training plans, timetable of counties and lots more.
To encourage you to don a pair of runners they guys have talked a number of well know celebrities to join them along the way. Michael O’Leary will be running a half marathon in Dublin; Keith Duffy will be running the full 26 miles that day too. Charmaine Kenny, the current Rose of Tralee is also going to join them one of the days. Henry Sheflin, Eamonn Coughlan, Peter Canavan and Daragh O’Shea are just some of the other sport stars who have agreed to be the race starters in their local counties.
So, please, check out the website, kick start your New Year’s resolution to get fit, dust off the old runners and sign up for a great event and a great cause! Best regards and thanks again.
