The Achill August Hillwalking Festival will take place from the 28th to 30th August. The programme for the festival is as follows:
Saturday 28th August 2010:
Walk A: Walk to Annagh
Visit Achill’s most secluded beach and explore the secrets of its surrounding landscape. Enjoy the seclusion and tranquility surrounded by high corry walls. This walk will be fully guided and includes a visit to the Signal Tower.
Depart: Dooagh Beach Car Park at 9.30am sharp. (There will be a short briefing before departure.)
Duration: Full day (approx. 7 hrs)
Grade: This walk is moderate, with a final strenuous climb. Suitable for walkers with a basic level of fitness. NOT suitable for beginners.
Charge: €15 per person. Numbers Limited.
Walk B: Siúl Cuan An Fhóid Duibh (Dugort Hill)
This walk starts in the historic village of Dugort and makes its way around the small rounded hill, Cruinneoc (214 metres). On the way you will pass the bogs that provided the fuel to heat Achill homes for centuries. Passing through an elevated scenic village you descend to the first of Achill’s Blue Flag beaches, The Golden Strand. On then to the Silver Strand, Achill’s second Blue Flag beach, dominated by the ramparts and sheer rock outcrops of Achill’s second highest mountain Slievemore (671 metres).
Depart: Strand Hotel car park, Dugort. 10.00am sharp.
Duration: 3 Hrs

Sunday 29th August 2010:
Walk A: An Cosán Cónra. (The Coffin Trail)
Go back in time and walk the scenic Coffin Trail over Minaun into Derreens, enjoying local history and folklore stories from the Local Guide. We will travel a distance of 16km approx, enjoying wonderful cliff top scenery. Enjoy refreshments in Pattens Bar, Derreens followed by presentation of certificates and commorative pins. (Transport provided to return walkers to the starting point in Dookinella.)
Depart: Dookinealla Beach Car Park at 9am SHARP
Duration: 7hrs approx.
Grade: Moderate (initially strenuous)
Charge: €15 per person
Walk B: Achill Beg
Enjoy a leisurely trip to one of our off shore islands, with a fully guided walk once there. Step back in time Enjoy the peace and tranquility of this island. Enjoy refreshments in Pattens Bar, Derreens followed by presentation of certificates and commorative pins.
Depart: Cé Bheag Pier, Kildownet at 10am
Duration: 6 hrs on the island
Charge: €20 per person
Monday 30th August 2010:
Walk A: Gubalennaun go Trámór (Dooagh to Keel Beach).
Coastline exploratory walk, follow in the footsteps of the famous Irish painter, Paul Henry. Your Guide will explain the relationship the painter formed with Achill, and its influence on his painting career. (In 2010 Achill will celebrate the centenary of his arrival on the Island and a special weekend dedicated to the artist is being planned.) Your walk will cover all aspects of the local flora, fauna and geology.
Depart: Dooagh Beach Car Park, 10am.
Duration: 4hrs approx.
Level: Easy. Charge: €15
Numbers Limited on Saturday and Sunday’s (A) walks
