The lastest offering from Cicerone,  The Ridges of England, Wales and Ireland: Scrambles, Rock Climbs and Winter Routes is a book for lovers of a good ridge walk. Author Don Baily writes in a very accessible way and has carried out detailed research to offer a number of stunning ridges aimed at readers of all levels.

As can be expected, the majority of the ridges are UK based but the author has provided 7 routes for the Irish reader with 5 in Kerry and 2 in the West. The Irish ridges covered are the Reeks Ridge Traverse, Stumpa an tSaimh and the Beenkeragh Horseshoe, Howling Ridge, Faha Ridge, Carrot Ridge on Bencorr and the Mweelrea circuit. The routes offered are described in meticulous detail and are supplemented with clear topological diagrams and a number of photographs. You can study the route and plan potential escapes prior to taking it on. Each walk is graded with detailed step by step directions provided as well as other practical information such as maps required, accommodation suggestions and information on public transport.

The author is a regular outdoor journalist and his love of the outdoors clearly comes across in his light-hearted but clear writing style. If you love scrambling or you want to take your hiking to another level, then this book is definitely recommended for you.
