Joyce Country Challenge

The Joyce Country Challenge gives you an opportunity walk one of Ireland’s hidden gems. The challenge takes place on Saturday 20th July 2013. Taking the plateau of ‘Maumtrasna’ and the ‘Devils Mother’ this circuit of Lough Nafooey is an area of natural beauty often overlooked by Ireland’s walkers. With outstanding views of the Turks, Mweelrea, Killary harbour, the Sheefrys and the Western Lakes.

There will be 4 routes on the day

Challenge (A walk)
The Challenge is for the experienced, fit and self sufficient walker coveting a distance of 30km with an ascent of 1936m.  The walk starts at Finny, on to Maumtrasna, Devils Mother, Ail Dubh (road – refreshments) Bunacunneen, Ben Beg before returning to Finny via the Southern Ridge.

B Walk
This is a lead walk which leaves Finney and ascends Ben Beg and Bunacuneen. The walk returns to Finney along the shore line path of Lough Na Fooey. The length of the walk is approximately 20km with 1000m of ascent and an expected duration of 7 hours.There will be a break for refreshments at Ail Dubh.

Walk C: Introduction to Hillwalking: New venture added this year! 
This will take in the hill behind Finny Hall which is 372m high and onward to Kilbride. The expected duration for this walk is 3 to 4 hours.

Walk D: Ramble
This will be a lead walk for the less experienced walker covering 14.5km with 281m of ascent. The walk will take 3 to 4 hours. Leaving Finny, circling Lough Na Fooey on lowland trail and returning to Finny by road. A break for refresments at Ail Dubh.

Walk C (Introduction to Hillwalking) Sign on 8:00am to 10:00am. Start 10:00am
Walk D (The Joyce Country Ramble) Sign on 8:00am to 10:30am. Start 10:30am
