Hikers take on the epic task of climbing the highest mountain in each of Ireland’s provinces in just 48 hours.

Christian Aid is looking for people brave enough to take on the 4:48 Challenge from 24th-26th August. The money raised from the event will go towards Christian Aid’s vital work overseas to help the world’s poorest people.

The three-day event will challenge both body and mind as the hikers work against the clock to scale some of the highest mountains in Ireland. David Cardy, a competitor last year praises the idea saying, “I have always thought about doing a trekking challenge and I thought that the 4:48 challenge seemed like a good one, but without needing months of preparation. I’ve always thought that if you can do something you enjoy and others can benefit from the money raised then it’s a win-win situation.”

Starting on Friday 24th, the trekkers will start the challenge by scaling Ulster’s highest peak Slieve Donard before a bus whisks them away to Co. Wicklow on Friday night. An early start awaits on Saturday morning as two mountains need to be conquered. Lughnaquilla, the highest point in Leinster is the morning’s activity before the team head west to Connacht to conquer Mweelrea. Finally, on Sunday 26th, the competitors will face Ireland’s largest mountain, Carrantuohill in Co. Kerry, Munster. Ascending the 1,041-metre mountain after two days of climbing will not be an easy feat.
Over the course of three days, the test will take in more than 3,300 metres or 11,000 feet of climbing, covering a total of forty kilometres along the way. Jonny Hanson, the event organiser says, “We’ve managed to fit extra sleep into the itinerary this year, but the same challenging route and stunning scenery remain the same.”

Last year’s youngest competitor, and Jonny’s brother, Aaron Hanson said of the event, “It’s gruelling but worth every second of it. I wouldn’t advise it to anyone who likes their forty winks!”
