Achill Island Half Marathon

The popular Elverys Sports Achill Half Marathon has given its fans another reason to travel to Achill Island in County Mayo on Saturday, July 6, 2013. A new 10K race will be run on the same day, so more runners will get the chance to enjoy the most beautiful course in Ireland. It can be challenging, with a couple of hills that can make athletes wonder why they took up running in the first place, but it is also one of the most rewarding on the AAI circuit, with stunning scenery around every bend offering a pleasant distraction when the going gets tough. A heartfelt welcome from local residents also helps to shorten the course.

In 2012 Michael Shannon set a course record of 1h 11m 56s in breezy conditions, and Fionnuala Doherty was the first woman across the finish line, not her first win in Achill, in 1h 29m 43s. Research carried out with the 2012 participants after the race showed that the Achill event is one of their favourites, mainly, they said, due to the friendliness of the local people and the organisers’ attention to detail.

Achill Events Management runs the race on a community non-profit basis, and a new firm pricing structure has been established for 2013, meaning there will be no last minute discounts offered, so runners should take advantage of the discounted prices while they’re available. The ‘Early Bird’ rate of €40 will be available until February 4, when the fee will go up to €45. On May 6 registration will rise to €50, and runners who leave it until June 16 or later to sign up will pay €55. Registration at the event headquarters for the ‘last minute deciders’ will cost €65.

The new 10k course will follow the Half Marathon course to the Dookinella crossroads, where it will bear left and then re-join the original course in Ballinasally. Registration for the 10k is currently €20, and will rise to €25 on May 6. Last minute entry at headquarters will cost €30.

Pieta House is the Elverys Achill Half Marathon charity partner for 2013, and a portion of all registration fees will be donated to this worthy charity (see www.pieta.ie).
