Based in Westport town, the August Walking Weekend out West is a must for the serious hillwalker. You will walk the highest peak in Galway ( Binn Bhán 729m ) on the Sunday with a nice introductory walk to begin the weekend in the Northern Maumturk mountains on the Saturday.
Friday August 1st:
Check into accommodation of your choice. Organisers can supply you with contact details of approved accommodation providers on request.
Saturday August 2nd: Northern Maumturks: Leenane Mountain.
Walk begins from Leenane village where you will pick up the Western Way. After 30 minutes approx you will ascend to the ridge that in turn leads to the highest point of the walk. Excellent view in all directions.
Height Gain: 700 m,
Time: 5 hours approx.
Terrain: Good underfoot conditions to start with boggier ground on parts of the ridge. Finishes on abog road.
Sunday August 3rd
A tougher walk than Saturday, we begin with the ascent of Knockpasheemore before ascending to Binn Bhán the highest peak in County Galway at 729m. We then descend a scree slope to Maumina and exit through a lovely valley back to the bus.
Height Gain: 800 meters in total
Time approx: 5 hours
Terrain: Boggy to start and also at the finish, but otherwise scree and good conditions underfoot.
Price: E 70.00 for both days – E 40.00 for one day.
Please note that bookings will not be taken on the day.
Equipment: All walkers must be properly kitted out with proper ankle support boots, good quality rain wear, fleece, hat, gloves, rucksack with liner, spare food, hot drinks, camera and walking poles (optional).
The organisers reserve the right to change, alter or abandon the scheduled itinerary in the event of bad weather or high winds. Any walker who in the opinion of the leader is not properly kitted out will not be allowed take part.
