The Galway Walking Club 18th Annual Marathon and Half Marathon takes place in Connemara along the Western Way enjoying the splendor of the Maumturk mountains and the Twelve Bens from Killary to Maam Bridge on Saturday 9th August 2014.
Experience the beauty of Connemara on this road and cross-country event with a choice of a full or half marathon. Participants will enjoy the splendour of both the Maumturk Mountains and Twelve Bens while walking along the Western Way. The highest point of the walk is at Maumean, a height of 259m, which all walkers pass before the last checkpoint. The route is from Killary to Maum Bridge in Connemara, mostly along the Western Way. All walkers will check in at the Community Centre in Maam Bridge before being brought to the start of the walk by bus. Pre-registration for the event is required, and registration details can be downloaded from the club website. Registered participants for full marathon can collect their numbers from 7 – 7.55 a.m. & half marathon participants from 8.30 – 9.25 am at the Community Centre, Maam Bridge. The Full Marathon bus departs at 8am & the Half Marathon bus departs at 9.30 a.m. All participants should bring a packed lunch; have walking boots & rain wear. Runners for the road sections are optional. Participants may drop out at any checkpoint. For safety reasons please let those manning the nearest checkpoint know if you do wish to drop out at any stage of the walk and transport will be arranged back to the centre to “check-out”. The fee of €25, applies to both options, and includes transportation to the walk start as well as a meal on completion.
