Happy Feet Walkers: Heritage and History Forest Walk

Cavan Walking FestivalJoin Happy Feet Walkers, on Friday May 3rd, for the launch of the Cavan Walking Festival walks, in the Cootehill area. This newly formed walkers group have an amazing range of walks, hikes and treks, for you to enjoy, from History and Heritage to Drumlins and Waterways, with a Family Friendly Orienteering Course, a Wind Turbine Challenge and a Night Walk, all included. Registration, for all their walks, is from 7pm to 9pm in St Michael’s Hall, Cootehill on May 3rd. This opening night launch will give you the opportunity to view their routes, meet their guides and fellow walkers and get into the spirit of the ten day Cavan Walking Festival . To get you moving on Friday night, registration will be followed by t fire group’s first walk, a late night ramble through Bellamount Forest, followed by ceoil agus craic and a sing song session in Don’s lounge.

Our Walks

Bellamont Night Walk -Friday May 3rd- 9pm (10k-Moderate) From St Michael’s Hall
Night walking has become a new and exciting challenge for those looking for something fun and different in the great outdoors. Don your boots for our night walk through the beautiful Bellamont forest. This nocturnal walk, has a number of fascinating surprises in store and commences at 9pm from the Hall. It will be followed by ceoil agus craic in Don Smith’s lounge. Bring your own musical instrument and singing voice and make a late night of it.

Drumlins and Waterways Walk- Sunday May 5th-10am (16k-Moderate) From Gallonray House
This 16k country ramble takes you through the rolling drumlins and lakeshores of east Cavan, passing Lakes Barnagrow, Sillan and Tacker. Thousands of years of historical landmarks and folklore, will be highlighted along this route. You can check out the source of the meandering Annalee river which eventually flows into the famous Erne waterways system. Meet at Gallonray House, Maudabawn, at 10am for this 3-4hour hike. This may be a wet and mucky trail, in parts, so come prepared, with a towel, change of footwear and lunch!

Dartrey Heritage and History Forest Walk- Bank Holiday Monday, May 6th-11am (10k-Easy)
St Michael’s Hall, Cootehill

This 10k heritage walk begins in the Ulster Plantation town of Cootehill. Visitors will learn about the impact of the Coote and Dawson dynasties on the economical and architectural history of Dartrey and Bellamount, with views of the ruins of the magnificent Dartrey Castle and estate and Bellamount House, one of the finest examples of Palladian Style architecture, in Europe. This comfortable hike leaves St Michael’s Hall, Cootehill at 11am, on Bank Holiday Monday, May 6th.

Wind Turbine Fitness Trek- Wednesday May 8th – 7pm, (10k -Moderate) St Michael’s Hall Cootehill.
Why not challenge yourself to a more vigorous, energetic and calorie burning hike. This is the one that will pump up the heart rate, get the body temperature rising and might even put a halt to your friendly banter. The views are also breath -taking with rugged hilltops visible for miles. You will almost touch the turbines as you learn about their contribution to Ireland’s renewable energy plight.

Why not join Happy Feet on Wednesday evening at 7pm, at St Michael’s Hall Cootehill. Car -pooling required. Walk will commence at 7.15pm, from Kilmount Church.

Family Friendly 4k Orienteering Walk-Sunday May 12th-2-3pm-(4k -Easy) St Michael’s Hall Cootehill.
Orienteering is a fun outdoor activity for all the family, using a map to locate hidden markers. Fastest team home are the winners. Or why not just take a map and find the features at your leisure, enjoying the fabulous Bellamont forest, with family and friends. This exciting activity commences at 2pm, from St Michael’s Hall. You can start any time between 2pm and 3pm, just come along pick up your map, and find and record the hidden markers. You will follow the Dromore River, from Haltons, along the outskirts of Bellamont Estate and return to base from St Michael’s Church, Station Rd, to St Michael’s Hall.
