Then get your walking boots on and come on a walk with the Gap O’ the North Hill Walking Club on Sunday 22nd September as part of the Slieve Gullion Get Outdoors Event. Last year the club organised a very successful National Trails Event with approximately 140 people taking part, it was the biggest turn out in Northern Ireland!

The walk will start at 11.30am from Slieve Gullion Car Park. We ask walkers to park at Dromintee GAA football Club and then make use of the free shuttle bus to the Slieve Gullion Forest Park. To book your space on this walk, go to the Ring of Gullion website www.ringofgullion.org and click on What’s On and Get Outdoors Event.

The ‘Gap of the North, Hill Walking Club’ has been in existence for just over two years and its membership has grown from a modest group of locals wishing to access the Ring of Gullion, to a phenomenal group of almost 100 members. The stunning Ring is the focal point of the walking club, as it provides varied and challenging walks, which the club alternate with walks in the Cooley Peninsula, the Mourne Mountains and further afield.

At the heart of the club is the desire for members to learn more about their local area’s traditions and history. The Chairman, Seamus Murphy has a boundless enthusiasm to find and record stories and histories, places and place names, and folklore for posterity. The club have recently located, with Seamus’s tenacity, “Cofracloghy” a Neolithic burial site on Carrickbroad Mountain, its exact location forgotten to a generation.

Booking is essential for the ramble and can be done through the Ring of Gullion website www.ringofgullion.org. Check out the club’s new website http://www.gaponorth.co.uk/.

Get Outdoors Weekend is organised by Outdoor Recreation NI in partnership with financial partners, Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure, Sport Northern Ireland and the Northern Ireland Environment Agency, Waterways Ireland with support from the Northern Ireland Tourist Board and sponsors ASDA.

The Ring of Gullion Get Outdoors Extravaganza is a free event supported by Newry and Mourne Council, NEIA, and the INTERREG-funded Mourne Cooley Gullion Geotourism project.
