Man Rescued From Lugnaquilla, Co. Wicklow

At 3:30pm today, December 9th, the Dublin & Wicklow Mountain Rescue Team and the Glen of Imaal Irish Red Cross Mountain Rescue Team were requested by An Garda Síochána to come to the aid of a male hill walker who had gotten lost when descending from Lugnaquilla in Co. Wicklow.

The walker in his 50’s who was a competent walker and a regular user of the mountains became disorientated during very tough weather conditions when he was descending from Lugnaquilla towards Baravore Carpark in Glenmalure.

Mountain Rescue Teams located the man using a technology called SARLOC which enables the teams to use his smartphone to pinpoint his location and provide a grid reference. Members of the mountain rescue teams made their way to the man’s location where they escorted him of the mountains.

For more information on SARLOC please see this RTE news report from earlier this year: http://www.rte.ie/news/2012/0117/walking.html

Note: this is the second incident on Lugnaquilla in 24 hours

Mountain Rescue would like to thank all those involved in this successful rescue including

  1. A general comment – we cant stress how many people attempt Luqnaquilla late in the day, alone or poorly equipped. If you are planning an ascent in the Winter months you need to be on the trail no later than mid morning!
