Thanks to Aoife Brennan for sharing these great shots of a recent walk of Lugnaquilla, the County Top of Wicklow and the highest mountain in Leinster.
“Am I ready for Lug’ yet?”
Ever since I was made redundant from a very sedentary job and started hill walking, I’ve been asking my much more experienced other half “am I ready for Lug’ yet?”
With the unusually warm weather we were having and several new tops under my belt in September, we made a break for it. We took on Lugnaquilla from the Fenton’s side of the Glen of Imaal, over Camara, and headed up into the clouds.
My hill top tradition is to make a leap next to the trig or cairn, and capture it on camera but this was the first time I had to use the trig for balance; the exertion and excitement made for wobbly knees. Sadly, visibility was virtually non-existent on top and we broke out the compass to start our descent. Of course, that only means we have to go back… We descended over Slieve Maan and Ballineddan and back to Fenton’s, an approximately 16km hike. I’m still flying high after the experience and look forward to doing it again.
