South Sligo Walking Festival

The South Sligo Walking Festival is taking place from Saturday May 5th – Monday May 7th 2012, with walks to suit all levels & abilities.

Short Walks
Our short walks take place on the beautiful undulating country roads in the Lough Talt area. Here we see South Sligo at its colourful-best with a great variety of scenery. Green farm land, rustic hills with smatterings of woodland… a very enjoyable and relaxing outing.
Registration for the Short Walks is at Joe Dan’s Pub on the day of the Walk. Cost: Adults €5.00 / Children €2.00

Distance: 3 to 4 miles
Duration: 1 to 2 hours.
Registration: 11am at Joe Dan’s and the bus departs at 11.30am approx.

Sunday 6th May, 2012
Short Walk – The Frenchman’s Grave
Duration: 1.5 to 2 hours
Distance: 3-4 miles

Family Walk – Bank Holiday Monday 7th May, 2012
The Lough Talt Loop Walk
Distance: 5 miles
Duration: 2 hours
Registration: Takes place at 12 noon at Lough Talt Carpark

Medium Walks
Our medium walks for those who have walked before take place over bog and mountain taking in spectacular views of Lough Talt, Lough Easkey, Lough Conn, and on a fine day views of Enniscrone beach and as far away as the Hills of Donegal. Walking gear is essential. One of the Medium walks will be the National Loop Walk around Lough Easkey. This loop walk is a stunning nature trail which crosses blanket bog with a combination of tracks, laneways and minor roads, and which has been developed by the Ox Mountain Development Company Ltd., and Sligo Co. Council, with a central role played by Sligo
Leader and Failte Ireland.
Registration for the Medium Walks is at Joe Dan’s Pub on the day of the Walk. Cost: Adults €12.00

Medium Walk – Kincullew – Caraloban – Lough Talt
Duration: 3.5 to 4 hours
Distance: 7-8 miles
Registration for all walks will take place in Joe Dan’s Pub at 11am and the bus departs at 11.30 am approx

Sunday 6th May, 2012
National Loop Walk Around Lough Easkey, Masshill via the Stirring Rock
Distance: 8 -9 miles
Duration: 4 – 5 hrs
Registration for all walks will take place in Joe Dan’s Pub at 11.00 am and the bus will depart at 11.30 am approx.

Bank Holiday Monday 7th May, 2012
The Ox Mountain Lake Walk
Duration: 3.5 to 4 hours
Distance: 6 miles
Registration: Takes place at 11.00 am at Joe Dan’s Pub and the bus departs at 11.30 am approx.

Long Walks
Our long walks are for the more seasoned walker to roam freely through rugged, unspoilt terrain surrounded by beautiful scenery speckled with
high altitude lakes and steams, giving yourself a chance to experience first hand the splendid isolation that is the Ox mountains. Experienced walkers only.
Registration for the Long Walks is at Joe Dan’s Pub on the day of the Walk. Cost: Adults €15.00

Long Walk – The Deserted Village Walk
Duration: 5-6 Hours
Distance: 12 miles approx
Registration time: 10 am approx (bus departs at 11 am from Joe Dans Pub)

Sunday: Long Walk
Largan, Sligo Way and Mount Taffee Walk.
Duration: 11 to 12 Miles
Distance: 7 to 8 hours.
Registration: 10am at Joe Dan’s Pub, Mullaney’s Cross. Bus departs at 10.30 approx

No long walk on the Monday.

If walkers are participating in the walks over the 3 days, the cost for the medium and long walks will be:
Medium Walk over the 3 day walking festival will be: €30.00
Long Walk over the 3 day walking festival will be €40.00
2 Days Walking: Medium & Long Walks: €25.00

Notes for Walkers…
Registration for all walks is at Joe Dan’s Pub, Drummartin on the day of the walk, where tea and coffee is provided to start your day. Time of registration varies for each walk and will be published nearer the time. Buses will depart will all the walkers to the various drop off points.
All walkers should select the walks which best suit their level of fitness and experience. Participants should be prepared for wet, windy and cold conditions. Walkers participate at their own risk. Experience of hill walking is essential on the long walks.
Please bring along rain gear, water proof boots, walking sticks and warm clothing. Walkers should have sufficient food and drink for the hill walks. Transportation will be provided to/from start and finish points where necessary.
Each of the Long Walks explore the Ox mountains and provide spectacular views of expansive bog, glimpses of the Atlantic Ocean (on clear days) and are broken with the lakes which speckle this range.
All walks are led as a group and it is important to stay with the Walk Leader. The leader’s decision is final and at all times to be accepted by the participants.
Half way through the medium and long walks, committee members will meet walkers with Tea/Coffee/Refreshments. On completion of the walks home-made Soup and Bread is served.
All monies received covers Insurance, Local Guides/Bus to the Drop Off Point/Refreshments.
No bicycles or dogs are not permitted on walks.
Under 16’s allowed ONLY under the supervision of a Parent/Guardian on all walks.
Please follow the COUNTRYSIDE CODE: Please adhere to the LEAVE NO TRACE code of outdoor ethics. Respect Private Property, Farmland, Wildlife and the rural environment.
The Ox Mountain Development Company Ltd., (Walking Festival Committee) maintain the right to change routes where deemed necessary over the Festival Weekend.
Traditional Music in Joe Dan’s Pub, Drummartin will be provided over the Walking Festival Bank Holiday Weekend. Local and Visiting Musicians and performers are welcome.
