Take the Concern Four County Challenge

Galtee Mountains

Galtee Mountains

On 31st of August 2013, Concern invites you to test your endurance and take the Four County Challenge.

Join Concern on this exciting new hiking event as they go off the beaten track through some of the most spectacular parts of Ireland. The 33km route will take you across four counties: Waterford, Tipperary, Cork, and Limerick. You’ll also be crossing two mountain ranges: the Knockmealdowns and the Galtees.

This will be a challenging yet achievable hike. The event is open to all fitness levels; for those who prefer a shorter hike, there’s also the option of completing a 24km route instead.

This walk really showcases the beauty of this less-travelled region. Walkers register at the end point of the walk in the Galtees. A bus then transfers them to the start point in the Knockmealdowns. The walk starts near the Vee at the beautiful Bay Lough in the Knockmealdowns near the sleepy village of Clogheen. The route meanders along the Avondhu Way taking in parts of Tipperary, Waterford and Cork with breath-taking views. Mountain track changes to quiet roads near Ballyporeen and from there the trail heads to the Galtees, entering at Galtee Castle near Skeheenarinky. It hugs the Attycran River and finishes at the foot of Galteemore at Kings Yard. Once you cross the bridge you are in County Limerick.

The Four County Challenge will use a sustainable, robust route to reduce any adverse environmental impacts from the event. As the event is almost entirely on robust tracks or quiet country roads, this will reduce pressure on the fragile peat land that cloaks these hills.

Registration is €25 and we are asking all participants to fundraise a minimum of €75. The money you raise will make a huge difference to our work helping the world’s poorest people to transform their lives. To register and for further information, please go to: www.fourcountychallenge.com.
