The Loop Head Walking and Heritage festival 2015

Walking_LoopHeadHave you visited “The Irish Times Best Place to Holiday” Yet? Every wondered why The Loop Head Peninsula in County Clare won the title? The answer is simple, vast areas of unspoilt beauty, large sandy beaches and hours of coastal walks to explore. The Loop Head Peninsula also won a European Destination of Excellence award along with being named as one of 100 Sustainable Destination in the World. Why? because it takes one thing very serious, “Tourism that is good for tourists, should also be good for locals”

The Loop Head Walking Festival has grown out of this Ethos. Local guides lead you on coastal walks which are personal to them. Local artist Carmel T Madigan grew up on Ross Bay near Kilbaha and has a passion for her locality, her guided walks include “Rocky Shore Exploration” and a “Tea Walk”. Laura Foley of The Long Way Round Guided Walks has a deep interest in the local history of the peninsula. Her walk near Carrigaholt is a study of the Monks, Sailors and Soldiers who once lived in the little headland of Kilcredaun for over a 1000 years .

Getting in a great hike is so important and The Loop Head Walking Festival won’t disappoint. The Loop Head Circuit is a 15km hike which takes in both aspects of the peninsula’s coastal landscape: the relative calm and shelter at the Mouth of the Shannon on the south side and the rugged, wild and windswept Atlantic on the north side. The walk starts at the jaw dropping loop Head Lighthouse which was chosen as a destination point on The Wild Atlantic Way.
