The Western Ocean Walking Weekend will run from Friday May 14 to Sunday May 16 and will offer three days of guided walking in differing landscapes of Erris, in NW Mayo. Walks are all graded easy, though underfoot conditions on Friday can be wet and heavy. Our small group will stay in an environmentally responsible B&B at the southern tip of The Mullet peninsula, at Blacksod. This is a wonderful part of western Ireland, offering beautiful views out over the ocean, surrounding islands and Achill to the south. This weekend is an ideal opportunity to get away from the city for a weekend’s relaxed strolling in the wild west.
Sheskin Forest and Knockmoyle bog complex. This is a five-hour walk through plantation and mixed woodland and the huge North Mayo blanket bog system. This is followed by a short walk on The Mullet’s cliffs.
We visit the uninhabited offshore island of Iniskea South, abandoned since the 1930s and now a major bird sanctuary and home to Grey Seals. Over a four-hour walk, learn of the fascinating human history of this now peaceful island. A great boat ride brings us out to this isolated spot.
A gentle four-hour stroll through sandy beaches, dunes and on low lying hills of the southern Mullet peninsula, offering wonderful views in all directions. Visit the local heritage centre.
Euro 269 pps, for 2 B&B sharing, 2 dinners, 3 packed lunches, boat hire and full guiding throughout. A single supplement of Euro 20 applies.
